Diversity and Inclusion Board (DIB)

I helped establish the Diversity and Inclusion Board to create knowledge about biases, privilege, and unequal power structures so that all students, whether or not they are in Greek life, can have a safer and healthier social experience at Penn.”

Our Story

OFSL’s Diversity and Inclusion Board (DIB) is a cross-council initiative to address and ameliorate issues of diversity and inclusion in Penn’s Greek community. Through a variety of educational programing, DIB aims to better the Penn Greek community’s knowledge of what constitutes diversity, how to better representation of marginalized communities in respective chapters, and facilitate allyship in Greek spaces.

Founded in 2015, Temilola “Temi” Ransome-Kuti, DIB has spent the last two years challenging itself and fraternity/sorority life to think critically and progressively about what it means to be Greek. Unsettled by the homogeneity of Greek spaces and reports of abuse and systematic exclusion from peers and members of our Penn community, Temi hosted a cultural competency workshop with the assistance of OFSL and Penn’s LGBT center. A group of students felt particularly galvanized after the event, and joined Temi in her endeavor to establish a board, within OFSL, that would serve to expressly address the needs and grievances of minority-identified Penn students.

In its nascence, DIB’s mission is constantly changing and growing. As of now, we are concerned with creating educational programming and spaces that target Greek communities in all three councils and inform them of methods and tactics they can use to center diversity and inclusion in their rush processes, philanthropy events, and various social endeavors. This includes an annual, weekend-long cultural competency workshop in the spring, collaborations with other student groups (like TableTalk and Panhellenic Council), and topical workshops that address the myriad ways fraternities and sororities tend to minimize or erase identity experience or representation.

After serving on the diversity leadership board at my high school and developing curricula for younger students, I knew that I wanted to transfer these experiences to my Penn community. Especially within Greek life, I saw a need to expand conversation around diversity and inclusion issues and to make our community more welcoming. I want to work with my peers to address serious conversations and provide a non-judgmental space to navigate the issues within our chapters. Through DIB, I hope to contribute to fostering a more open, inclusive, and considerate Greek community.

Request a DIB Mediation

What is the purpose of the DIB mediation process?

When a conflict arises among student groups that involves identity and bias, they are encouraged to arrive at a resolution that best suits the needs of both parties. A Diversity and Inclusion Board member may serve as the facilitator when one of the parties is a recognized fraternity or sorority at Penn. It is important to note that mediation only occurs when both parties voluntarily agree to participate in the process.

What is the DIB mediation process?

  • Contact the Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Board to set up a private meeting where you will have the opportunity to discuss your particular situation.
  • If it is determined that mediation is the next step, you and the Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Board will determine the best method of inviting the other participants to be part of the process.
  • If the other participants agree, we will arrange a mutually agreed upon time for mediation.
  • Cases are not always resolved.
